The Importance of a Multidisciplinary Team

Two AVentPro technicians working together at a recent event.

A video director who began their career as a camera operator. A sound designer who transitioned their skills into live events as an audio technician, before discovering a hidden talent for running PowerPoint presentations. A technician who can move seamlessly between audio and visual positions, working both with clients and leading a technical team.

In an industry that has often pigeon-holed event technicians into one specialty, we believe in the power, and importance, of a multidisciplinary team. Having a multidisciplinary team means that our event technicians aren’t told to stay in their lane. Instead, we consider the experience and strengths of each technician and give them opportunities to transition their skills into different roles and functions on the event team.

Being a multidisciplinary team gives our event technicians more opportunities to grow. It allows us to be a more flexible organization. Most importantly, it enables us to bring the very best of AVentPro to every one of our events.

The Benefits of Multidisciplinary Team.

It’s been said that preparation is the key to success, and we could not agree with the sentiment more. A team that is heavily prepared and armed with well-rounded knowledge will not only perform better and more consistently than a less experienced team, they’ll better understand how to work together and support each other than teams that operate as silos, only understanding the strict functions of their roles.

Team benefits.

Event professionals who are experienced working in multiple roles can support one another and work together. They’re speaking the same technical language, allowing them to communicate easily, they are prepared and capable of assisting each other when needed, are better able to adapt if a challenge arises, and build a trusting relationship.

On an individual level, technicians add skills to their tool belts by drawing on knowledge they already have. It helps them gain a deeper understanding of how every component of an event fits together while discovering new skills, talents, and strengths.

Company benefits.

Having a multidisciplinary team gives us greater flexibility when making staffing decisions. Rather than selecting technicians based solely on who is available, we’re able to select our team strategically, weighing who the best fit for a specific client or program will be, as well as who has experience working in a specific type of venue or with the show’s unique elements.

This allows us to bring the best of AVentPro to every event.

Client benefits.

It’s not only our team and organization that benefits from our multidisciplinary team – our clients directly benefit from the adaptability and flexibility of the crew onsite.

Having team members who are able to perform roles outside of the one they were assigned to saves our clients time. If more than one presenter wants to review their presentation backstage or a new video becomes available while the playback operator is busy completing another task, another member of the crew may assist, rather than asking the client to wait.

With multidisciplinary teams, there are situations where we are able to reduce the number of operators required on an event. One technician may be able to take on the responsibilities of more than one role, positively impacting the budget without sacrificing the quality of the event.

Not to mention, with more well-rounded knowledge comes enhanced innovation and creativity. Technicians with more experience will have a wider range of ideas on how technology can be used creatively. They’ll be able to leverage their wealth of knowledge to not only remove risk factors, but to create a more exciting and unique event experience.

Promoting a Multidisciplinary Team.

Cultivating a cross-functional team is something we’ve made a concerted effort to do.

We consider what skills somebody has, even if their prior experience is in an adjacent industry, such as concerts or theatrical performances. Our team works with new or potential team members to transition the skills they have into a live event setting. We like to find what technicians find most rewarding and encourage them to lean into their interests.

Once they’ve gained a thorough understanding of their role, as well as valuable experience, we continue to assess their skills, considering any new interests, strengths, or talents that have emerged. We see what aspects of their knowledge can be easily applied to other skills or disciplines and give them the opportunity to add more tools to their repertoire and grow as technicians.

Our technicians are able to continue to gain knowledge, and we become a more experienced, flexible, and stronger team.
